The Government Extends Visa Application Deadlines

In a crucial move aimed at addressing the ongoing visa backlog and stabilising the Department of Home Affairs processes, the South African government has extended the deadline for visa application outcomes to December 31, 2024. This extension applies to all applicants who submitted their visa, waiver, or appeal applications before June 30, 2024. The extension allows these individuals to remain in the country legally while their applications are being processed, provided they hold a verifiable receipt of the application.

The newly appointed Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Leon Schreiber, has made it clear that tackling the massive visa backlog is a top priority. In a recent interview, Minister Schreiber emphasised that the Department has already cleared over 50% of the backlog, reducing the initial 306,000 pending applications to less than 200,000. This progress has been achieved through the concerted efforts of a dedicated team within Home Affairs, supported by external partners such as Deloitte.

Minister Schreiber expressed his determination to clear the remaining backlog by the end of the year, stating that avoiding further extensions of the visa concession depends on the Department’s ability to meet this goal. The extension to December 31, 2024, marks the third such concession, and the Minister is committed to preventing the need for a fourth.

The Department of Home Affairs has implemented several temporary measures to protect applicants while the backlog is addressed.

Waiver Applications

Visa holders with pending waiver applications as of June 30, 2024, are granted an extension until December 31, 2024. They may exit and re-enter South Africa during this period without being declared undesirable, provided they follow the necessary protocols.

Visa Applications

Individuals with pending long-term visa applications are also granted an extension until December 31, 2024. These applicants must adhere strictly to the conditions of their current visas during this time.

Visa Appeals

Those appealing negative decisions on long-term visa applications will similarly have their current visa status extended until December 31, 2024. They are required to present both their rejection letter and appeal application receipt when exiting and re-entering South Africa.

A Broader Reform Agenda

Minister Schreiber’s approach extends beyond merely addressing the current backlog. He is also focused on long-term reforms to prevent such issues from recurring. This includes enhancing the Department’s online systems, integrating queue management, and reducing the Department’s reliance on manual processes that contribute to inefficiencies and corruption.

The establishment of the Immigration Advisory Board, which will include experts from various fields, is another significant step toward ensuring evidence-based policy-making in immigration matters. The Board will play a key role in addressing complex issues such as the future of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP).

The extension of the visa application deadline to December 31, 2024, offers relief to thousands of foreign nationals contributing to South Africa’s economy. It also signals the government’s commitment to reforming the visa system and ensuring that South Africa remains an attractive destination for international talent and investment.
