04 Mar South African Passport Renewal Centres Now Operational in the US
South Africans who find themselves based abroad in the United States of America will be happy to hear that new South African passport renewal centres are now fully operational across the United States. These centres are operated by VFS Global in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and are designed to make passport renewals and additional civic services more convenient and accessible to both South African and dual citizens.
Following the successful launch of VFS Global passport services in New York City and Washington, DC, additional centres have opened in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami. This important achievement follows the commitment set forth by the Department of Home Affairs to improve and modernise service delivery for South Africans living in the United States. These centres are set to provide South African citizens with access to consular, civic, and passport services. Applicants can now submit their applications at the centre that is most convenient to them, eliminating the need to travel long distances for in-person appointments.
What Does This Mean for South Africans who are Based in the US?
The launch of DHA service centres in the United States is meant to be an interim measure to bring relief to South Africans living abroad, while long-term digital solutions are still in development. These new centres aim to streamline services by providing a more efficient, secure, and comfortable environment for document submissions, reducing waiting times to roughly 2-3 months. However, despite improved application processing speeds, it is still advised to apply 12-18 months in advance before your current passport expires. Additionally, applicants can also now opt for courier delivery, eliminating the need to collect documents in person.
